Harry, Beautiful Painting... I love the movement the painting shows.

Harry, this is quite a beautiful painting. I really get the feeling of being in this landscape and walking along these rolling hills on a warm summer's eve. Truly a work of art!

Artist's Description

The board on which I did the study shown here had already been painted on. The original painting was a double portrait, with which I had been intermittently struggling for a year or so. Unfortunately, although one likeness worked ok, the other one didn't. Whatever I tried didn't work. So in a moment of frustration I painted over the whole thing with an opaque deep rusty brown.
This dark brown base (which was already fairly roughly textured from the previous painting) enabled me to do this rough study using the old dark to light method. Big-ish brushes; no under-drawing; direct application of thick paint; about one hour.

About Harry Robertson

Harry Robertson

I was born into a British working-class family in Scarborough, Yorkshire. I have an elder brother and sister. We were brought up in what is now called a single-parent family. Our mother was a waitress. When she died, we kids went off in different directions. Not choice, it just happened. After something of a chaotic period I ended up with foster parents living in Darwen, Lancashire, aged eleven. They took me with them when they moved to Manchester. At the age of twelve I was offered an interview for a place in the Manchester High School of Art, a specialist junior art school in the normal secondary system. A place had become available because a pupil had climbed into the building next door for a bet with his mates. It was Strangeways...
